A Liturgy of the Word was celebrated with the Native Peoples of Canada by Pope John Paul II at Martyrs’ Shrine (Huronia), Midland, ON. Around the altar with the Holy Father were several Native deacons who had been formed at the Anishinabe Spiritual Centre. The liturgy included smudging as a purification ritual.

September 10, 1984

In September 1984, Pope (now Saint) John Paul II made a 12-day apostolic visit to 13 sites across Canada. A particular focus was Indigenous peoples. On September 10, he addressed a gathering of Indigenous peoples at the Shrine of Ste-Anne-de-Beaupré.

The Social Affairs Committee and the Pastoral Committee for Indians and Inuit of the Assembly of Bishops of Quebec issued a pastoral letter entitled “The First Nations in Quebec”, inviting non-Natives to better recognize Aboriginal people’s rights.
